What is Maca?

Maca Powder (Lepidium Peruvianum)Maca is a form of radish (Lepidium Peruvianum Ch.) which grows in Peru. It is grown at over 4000m in the Andes and is the only crop in the world grown at such altitude.

The Incas used maca to give them energy and courage. Today many Peruvians still take it daily as a food.

There are over fifty active phytochemicals identified in maca. It is full of much needed minerals and vitamins.

History of Maca

The Incas cultivated maca on a large scale because of its vitalising properties and to counter the the cold and thin air at high altitude in the Andes. Maca is thought to have been widely cultivated over 3000 years ago. Troops took maca before battles to give themselves stamina and strength. The esteem in which maca was held is clear from the large quantities given to their royal family.

Traditionally maca was cooked whole in pits in the ground or boiled and mashed.

Despite its reputation maca production declined until, twenty or thirty years ago, it was on the brink of extinction. Scientific analysis of the dietary components of maca rekindled interest and maca production has steadily increased since that time.

If you have an illness or any other concerns then please check with your doctor or herbalist before taking Maca.
