The
Story of Friendship Bracelets
Traditionally
friendship bracelets are given to friends. The knot-craft and handweaving
used to create traditional patterns originates from Native American
handcraft and in particular from a Central American tradition.
According to indigenous American tradition, the recipient of a
friendship bracelet must wear it until the threads wear out and
fall off naturally. In these traditions the friend that gives
it to another friend makes the friendship bracelet from threads
and beads and various natural materials. The value of the friendship
is acknowledged and honoured by the giver of the friendship bracelet
through the love and sheer effort that went into the making of
it. The recipient returns the honour given by wearing the bracelet
and even making one for the friend in return. Removing the friendship
bracelet before it naturally falls off is a sign that the friendship
no longer exists. Another variation of this tradition is that
the recipient of a friendship bracelet is entitled to a wish.
After the friendship bracelet wears out and falls off naturally,
the wish will come true. Why not combine the two..friendship and
a wish.
