What
is a Firesteel?
A
Firesteel is an interesting gadget for lighting fires that comes
in three models which are all basically the same but look different.
The Scout Firesteel above has around 3,000 strikes to it. The
Army Firesteels have around 12,000 strikes.
The
Firesteel was developed by a Swedish Arctic survival expert.
Most of us won't end up in the Arctic depending on our Firesteel,
but if we did we could be assured that it would work when needed
- unlike that damp box of matches.
What
is the Firesteel made of?
It
is made from a magnesium alloy of 7 metals.
How
do I use it?
By
dragging the striker (the silver piece) slowly across the metal
of the main body a large spark is ignited. This spark is extremely
hot (3,000°C). This spark will then light the tinder prepared
for the fire/stove/barbecue. As the Firesteel is water resistant
and easy to use it truly is a survivalist's friend.
